The Le Mans 24 hour-race is next to the "Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix" and the "Indianapolis 500" one of the most famous, traditional and prestigious races in the world.
The first Le Man 24 hour-race was carried out in 1923 on the traditional lane Circuit de la Sarthe. The goal was to give the audience an opportunity to appreciate the latest technical conquests of automobiles and to give the manufactures an opportunity to test new constructions under extreme conditions.
The most successful driver in Le Mans is the Danish Tom Kristensen who to this date (January 2009) has won the race eight times – six times in a row – from 2000 to 2005. Only one driver has won 6 times before Tom Kristensen – that is the Belgian Jacky Ickx. Tom Kristensen is furthermore the owner of the lane record: 3:31:211. This was set in 2006 at the now 13.650 kilometres long lane.
In the early Le Mans years the races were marked by victories of Porsche, Ferrari, Bentley, Alfa Romeo and Jaguar, but at the millennium, Audi introduced their R8 with a V8-motor. Until 2005 Audi won all races with this Audi R8 – with only one exception in 2003. Tom Kristensen was among the drives behind the wheel. In 2006 Audi entered as a manufacturer team with the most powerful diesel engine of the racing world. The car was named Audi R10 and has a V12 motor with double turbo and what is even more important it contains a moment of over 1100 Nm. Tom Kristensen, however, was not in the winning Audi car in 2006.
